Dissension in Barisan, Discipline in Opposition

THE hump of Nomination Day over yesterday, the mammoth Barisan Nasional (BN) ruling vehicle is vulnerable on several fronts in the days leading up to Polling Day on March 8.

The rough behind-the-scenes manoeuvrings in the run-up to the nomination of candidates have revealed that the formidable BN machinery is showing signs of stress.

Unless these strains are managed carefully in the next 12 days of campaigning, any hefty electoral gains that Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi is hoping to secure will be reduced sharply.

In the coming days, the main task for Datuk Seri Abdullah will be to soothe the wounds within his own Umno party, which is still smarting from a bruising selection process for candidates.
